Radical Peugeot Polygon Concept hints at new 208

Peugeot has unveiled its radical-looking Polygon Concept in full, giving insights into future models including the next-generation 208 supermini.

Already previewed on Polygon City in Fortnite and now unveiled on the French brand’s YouTube channel, the compact three-door hatchback “defines Peugeot’s next chapter” and previews new design elements that demonstrate its “vision for the future”.

While features such as the gullwing doors are unlikely to make it into the next edition of the 208, the Polygon Concept “dynamic proving ground” does showcase various innovations that Peugeot will introduce for new models from 2027 onwards – in particular the Hypersquare steering wheel and steer-by-wire technology.

The French brand says the rectangular steering wheel will provide a new ergonomic approach to the i-Cockpit dashboard design and means key controls are accessible via four circular pods at each corner, allowing drivers to keep your hands on the steering control without lifting a finger.

It’s paired with steer-by-wire electronic steering technology, marking a first amongst Stellantis and replacing the mechanical link between the steering and the wheels with pure electronic control. This technology, already seen in the aerospace industry, will be available on a production Peugeot vehicle from 2027.

The system adjusts steering ratio based on speed. At low speeds – for parking or turning around – Hypersquare allows quick, easy manoeuvres without moving your hands or making multiple turns. At higher speeds, small inputs are enough to adjust the car’s trajectory.

The Hypersquare also enables Peugeot to reinvent the dashboard, removing displays and instead projecting all information onto the windscreen with a display size that’s equivalent to a 31-inch screen.

The Polygon Concept also takes a radical stance on recycling, with many components easily replaceable, allowing the vehicle to evolve with its owner and encouraging longer ownership. For example, the seat foam can be swapped in minutes for a new colour or a more “enveloping” shape, while the Hypersquare steering wheel, wheel covers and customisable dashboard elements can all be easily replaced to suit changing tastes and needs.

Other details include a new interpretation of Peugeot’s ‘claw’ daytime running lights and a dedicated micro-LED screen located on the C-pillar and allowing users to check the vehicle’s charge level without entering the car.
