BYD accelerates PHEV offensive with arrival of Atto 2 DM-i

BYD is launching a plug-in hybrid version of its Atto 2 compact electric SUV, accelerating its EV and PHEV blitz on the European market.

Due for arrival in the first quarter of 2026, the petrol-electric version joins the recently launched fully electric version of the brand’s smallest SUV and further diversifies its line-up.

It follows in the footsteps of last year’s arrival of the Seal U DM-I D-segment SUV; the Chinese car giant’s first plug-in hybrid vehicle in Europe and now a best-seller in several key markets.

In the case of the Atto 2 DM-i, the Super Hybrid with DM technology enables an electric-only range of up to 90km (55 miles) – “enough for many commutes” – and a total range of 1,020km (633 miles).

BYD is tight-lipped on full tech details for now but says two versions of the Atto 2 DM-i will be available, offering different battery sizes, EV and overall range, power outputs and performance.

The Atto 2 DM-i will also get “subtle” design tweaks to set it apart from pure-electric versions of the Atto 2. These changes include a larger middle front grille, decorative lower elements in the front bumper, the removal of the side vents in the front wings and resigned badging on the tailgate. There will also be a new exterior colour, Midnight Blue; unique to the DM-i variant.

The Atto 2 DM-i will open for pre-sales towards the end of the year, with first deliveries expected from the opening quarter of 2026.
